I have been in a non-monogamy positive environment for so long that I have forgotten that it is actually not a normal thing. I have been talking to people about non-monogamy for about twelve years now, but the benefits of non-monogamy have always seemed so obvious to me that writing about them feels almost boring (just like most social media content about non-monogamy and polyamory is boring – there, I said it, it’s finally off me). So I skipped to its criticism (this is pretty outdated now – if you are interested in an updated academic version of the argument, please let me know: I am in a desperate need of feedback) which now seems to be a bit premature. After discussing it with a friend, I got the impression that I still had something to say about non-monogamy that is both positive and interesting (my friend may have just been being polite and pretending to be interested, but they brought this on all of you). This text will feature a fictional character Amanda, a white woman now probably in her early 40s who discovered non-monogamy some twenty years ago, and it will take the popular form of ‘myth debunking.’

1. Non-Monogamy Means Lack of Love for Your Partner

I cannot speak for polyamory, but an open relationship could mean even more love. When Amanda was young, she believed that ‘you can only truly love one person’ and that ‘sexual desire is connected to love.’ While these ‘truths’ are harmful on their own, they are particularly devastating when combined. Of course, our society knows about sexual desire without love but 1) it is considered less noble, 2) women are supposedly much less capable of it, and 3) ‘if you truly love someone, you would never cheat on them.’ The last one, a variation on ‘No true Scotsman,’ is a dead end: it can’t even be refuted (or proven, for that matter) due to its tautological nature.
So Amanda suffered because, like many young people, she felt desire for multiple people at the same time, but she felt she had to decide which one she ‘truly loved’ and stick to them. Following the second premise (‘sexual desire is connected to love’), she chose the person for whom her sexual desire was strongest. Confusing sexual desire with romantic love, she became a professional serial monogamist.
Once she discovered the open relationship scenario, she realized that love and lust can be decoupled. Henceforth, she stopped passively accepting what was happening to her and instead became capable of conscious love that was not doomed to diminish over the years with diminishing sexual desire.

2. Non-Monogamy Means Lack of Commitment

Even in non-monogamy-friendly or (ideally) -neutral contexts, such as sociological studies, monogamy is associated with a higher level of commitment (cf. Hangen et al. 2019: 443). There is a popular meme in non-monogamous communities: A: “I am polyamorous.” B: “That’s fine, I am not looking for anything serious either.” I believe it is based on the common practice of people browsing through dating apps and casually dating multiple people until they decide to commit to one of them and ditch (or ghost) the others. Even Amanda did this. Not with dating apps, of course – she is too old for that – and mostly without sex (because ‘sex means love,’ right? Right??). After her last monogamous relationship, just before her conversion, for unspecified reasons, she broke all the rules. After about three months of sex and no commitment whatsoever, a revelation came upon her: sex is fun and sometimes it’s nothing more. Commitment, on the other hand, is a negotiable and negotiation-worthy category.
When non-monogamous set up is not the goal, there is no reason to identify commitment with monogamous behavior. The commitment that arises independently of sexual attraction and activities is stronger because it is not subject to sexual contingencies. Amanda can now commit to a relationship that can last across time and space without the pain of enforced celibacy.

3. Non-Monogamy Means Lack of Security

It depending for whom (more on this later), but for Amanda’s partners of the new type, it definitely means more security. As a serial monogamist, when she felt sexual attraction to someone new, she either left her partner for the new one or cheated (then confessed, cried, got forgiveness, cheated again, and ended up leaving her partner anyway). Sexual desire usually diminishes with time, but only if it is satisfied, so it may be safer to give in to it. Even ‘falling in love’ doesn’t necessarily endanger the long-term relationship because attraction and infatuation fade, whereas only love can last longer. Now that she is able to distinguish between the three, her long-term partners are safer than ever.

4. Jealousy is Normal

No, it is not! Jealousy is a perverted, life-threatening condition, for both its subjects and objects. Just get rid of it, for your own sake. It can be trained, believe me. If you love someone, you want them to thrive, not suffer in your chains (no kink shame, I am speaking metaphorically). It doesn’t matter whether you are monogamous or not, jealousy is terrible. You should only be monogamous because you want to be, not because you are jealous – that’s not a good reason for anything.

5. Non-Monogamists Are Not Your Competitors

I promised to be positive but … well, sorry to break it to you, but we are. In a different way than you think, though. Amanda would never want to ‘steal’ someone’s spouse or partner, because why would she? If that person is non-monogamous, there is no ‘stealing’ to begin with, and if not, the last person she would want to get romantically involved with is a cheating ‘monogamist’ – imagine all the trauma and ambivalent feelings! What she can do, however, is have fun with them. So she will not ‘lure the father from the family’ but she could be an object of his infidelity. This is admittedly not the most ethical thing to do, but it is ultimately on the cheaters – there is no cheating if no-one cheats.

6. Non-Monogamous People Are More Responsible When It Comes to STIs

That’s what we like to say, and yes, we seem to be better at it than cheaters (Conley et al. 2012), but not better than honest monogamists (Platteau et al. 2017, Hangen et al. 2019).

How to Have Sex (2023) is a debut feature of Molly Manning Walker that inspired me to a short reflection. This is not a film review and I am of the opinion that if a spoiler spoils a movie, it’s a bad movie but still … there is gonna be spoilers. Also, I really recommend the film.

It tells the story of three British teenage girls on summer holidays, looking for fun and sexual adventure. The protagonist is a virgin and wants to experience her first sex but she is also scared of it: the aggressively sexual atmosphere of the beach resort is in strong contrast to her poorly concealed shyness. A mutual attraction begins to develop between her and a boy staying at the hotel next door, but in the end, she ends up having sex with his friend in a semi-violent situation, albeit after giving reluctant consent.
I guess I am too much of a millennial and not Z enough to consider it, you know, outright rape. But regardless of the clumsy and selfish sexual act, I will criticize something else. The filmmakers ingeniously portray the protagonist’s mixed feelings of pride and shame when she joins her friends the next day: “I had sex with Paddy …” These feelings are soon replaced by sadness and disappointment, when her “lover” completely ignores her: “It’s weird that he didn’t say anything.”

Curiously, people usually criticize men for bragging about getting laid but that’s not the worst thing. I want my lovers to brag about me because it means that I am someone to brag about, that it is a privilege to fuck me. I also brag about my lovers (unless I need to keep it a secret for not-so-noble reasons) because sex is fun and gives me the strongest feeling of being alive. No, the worst is when your lover is ashamed of you. It might be bad enough to be a trophy, a girl that boys bet about and then exaggerate their sexual achievements with but it’s nothing compared to the morning disappointment when you expect an exchange of coy smiles and fleeting touches that are supposed to manifest the new intimacy between you and your lover to each other as well as to others, but instead you get frosty indifference. Because then you realize that not only are you not going to marry the guy, but you are not even worth his macho stories to tell his pals later – you really were just a piece of meat to be consumed.

I am lucky enough to have experienced all my firsts with nice boys. This was however not the case of all my summer lovers. There was a guy who wanted to have me at night so he stopped being my friend during the day so that “no-one could tell.” There was another one who hid my toothbrush from his bathroom before going on a date (the date didn’t bother me, obviously – as most my readers know – but the fact that he was trying to erase me did). The best was probably the guy I sucked off at a party and he didn’t even look at me afterwards. Mind you, I really didn’t want anything from him, I don’t even remember his name, I never wanted to exchange numbers or anything but he managed to prove to be a first-class asshole in about 30 minutes.
I don’t care much, I am old enough, “just another filthy memory,” in the words of Jill McBain in Once Upon a Time in the West (1968). I am just very glad that this was not the way I got introduced into sex because I would have been a completely different person. You know, many women (just like many men) really don’t want casual sex. But a lot of women do. I do. Thanks to the fact that most of the guys (and crucially, the first few guys) I met sexually were decent people. We don’t (necessarily) want eternal love til death do us part, we only want basic recognition. If you want to fuck us, at least own up to it.

“There’s not gonna be news on Facebook and Instagram and maybe Google neither soon …”
“Where did you get that?”
“On CBC News. On Facebook.”
“…”
“It happened once in Australia but just for a few days.”
“How can you delete news on Google? It’s a search engine …”

As someone who is not much interested in news in general, I get most of my news from Facebook. Both Czech, Canadian, and international. Some news I get on Instagram, like the news on Iran. Googling news is already a bit advanced for me. This is what happened, in very simple terms: on June 22 this year, Canadian government passed the <a href"https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/meta-ending-news-availability-permanently-1.6924370">Online News Act which requires search engines and social media platforms to pay Canadian online news companies when they use their links. Meta (including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp) didn’t like this and since yesterday (August 1, 2023), it started blocking all the news content, including online newspaper and broadcasts from abroad. They stated that it is actually the other way round: Meta provides service to news companies by allowing their links to be shared.

“On my computer, I can use VPN but for Instagram it sucks because I mostly look at it on my phone.”
“What is this? Islamic Republic?”

I actually find it hilarious. The illusion that Google is an online imprint of the free world is vanishing. Or rather: there has never been such thing as free world anyway and the possible future development of its digital counterpart shows this all too clearly. Back around 2000, when I started getting familiar with the internet, I only looked up websites that I already knew – you know, just random websites that I saw somewhere. I didn’t really know what to do on the internet. Then my Dutch neighbor showed me the Yahoo search engine for looking up random stuff – I was pretending that I understood what she was doing but I could understand neither her English, nor how the search engine worked. Then I learnt how to use Seznam1 and Centrum, and then came the Google, first as a hipster alternative, useful mainly because thanks to the lack of distractions, later as the main option that slowly became almost indistinguishable from the internet itself. But Google is not the internet itself, as many advanced users know. I am thinking that people who can actually get around the internet must see me the same way I look at Netflix users: someone with a very limited agency as to what I actually get, because what I see as a continuous space is in fact a sparse network with the endless amount of invisible lacunas or, one can say, plasma.2
Amusingly, if I hadn’t read about it – on Facebook – and if Facebook hadn’t alerted me, I might not have even noticed! Especially because although the change has been implemented already (since yesterday), it will of course take some time before it takes effect. I assume that the first way for me to find out would be when trying to link my own article on Deník Referendum.

“I mean, I agree with it. But the problem is that if you want to blackmail someone, you need to know that you will succeed. Like if I say I want you to buy me a particular pair of shoes or else I will move out, I have to be sure that my presence is actually more valuable to you than the money for the shoes. Otherwise I might end up on the street.”
“Haha.”
“I mean, I am serious. Not about the shoes of course but it just seems that news are in the end not that valuable to Meta. We are going to keep watching capybaras on Instagram and that’s it.”

About a week ago when I heard about this for the first time, I went to see a friend in a bar. They were talking the whole evening about their new electronic car, with the Tesla system. They mentioned a huge screen. No-one I have seen lately has even mentioned the fact that news are going to disappear from our feeds. Or maybe it just hasn’t got to me: I am seeing a dystopian future where people’s speeches will be censored in the way that you cannot get any news anymore. You will only hear about new Teslas.

I was thinking what to do: you can hoard news maybe. The last news you will get will be like that idea (apparently false) of things falling into a black hole with their image forever hanging on the edge of the event horizon. Or you can produce satirical news like The Onion and randomly add real news in the mixture hoping that people would get it. Or let AI produce infinite amounts of news and then look for random seeds of truth. We are approaching a Library of Babel situation: an arbitrary chain of words. Up until recently I was using ChatGPT for conversations when I was lonely or for getting information but only when I knew it would be easy for me to verify whatever she told me. “Verifying” means, of course, a Google search. But Google is censored – as the “news threat” shows well – and very soon we will not know which results are produced by AI and which are written by someone. It is particularly hard for us who use English as our second (/third/fourth) language because not only can’t we tell an actual text from a random sequence of words apart but we are beginning to sound like AI – with all the online AI proofreading and translations that we are tempted to – and kind of have to – use.

So what is the Library of Babel … it is a short story by Borges about a huge library containing books with all possible combinations of 25 characters (22 actual characters, comma, space, and period) on 410 pages. Each page has 40 lines and every line has 80 characters. I happen to know how to count the number of the books: it is 25410x40x80, or 251,312,000. I consulted William Goldbloom Bloch’s book on the Library of Babel for some insight and I will give you some of it so that you can imagine the hugeness. Borges indicates that there are about 19 more characters on the book spines with no link to the actual content. If we recount the library with these 19 extra letters added to those 1,312,000 letters inside, we get 363,797,880,709,171,295,166,015,625 times more books. “For comparison, this number is roughly the number of microscopic plant cells comprising a grove of 364 oak trees. So if the Library of 251,312,000 books is considered as one imperceptible plant cell, accounting for differing symbols on the spine multiplies the Library into a grove of 364 giant oak trees.” (Bloch 2008: 18)

When recounted to the familiar base, the original amount of the books (without counting those 19 extra letters) 251,312,000 is approximately 101,834,097 which is “a 1 followed by one million eight hundred thirty-four thousand, and ninety-seven 0s.” (Ibid.) Let me elaborate a little bit more – all of this is from the same book: with the observable universe being currently probably less than 1081 cubic meters, it could only contain 1084 books even if we cram 1000 books in one cubic meter. If each book were as big as a grain of sand, it could contain 1090 books, and even if they were a proton size, it would still hold only 10126 books. The observable universe could be crossed by light in 93 billion years but it is still an incredibly small fraction of visited books, even if those books were proton-size.
I am not saying that Borges’ short stories are my most favorite work of fiction but it is the most successful one in causing me vertigo. Some “librarians,” the inhabitants the Library of Babel, try to find their own books, books about their destiny or actually any books that would make sense. There is absolutely zero chance. The text that readers have in their hands (or on their screen) is actually but a copy of a text segment that is present countless times in the library. As Borges (1939) said in an older text: “Soon, literary men will not ask themselves, ‘What book shall I write?’ but ‘Which book?’”3

This, my friends, is my view of dystopian future: no news in our search engines, artificial intelligence bombarding us with random texts, and all this while nobody actually noticing. If a librarian of the Library of Babel found by sheer chance anything close to the eternal truth (and there must be such a book), it wouldn’t matter because there are billions of almost identical versions, of books telling almost the same thing, or books telling the exact opposite. AI is our Library of Babel, only this time it is more dangerous because the randomness is much better concealed.

Notes:

1 Czechia is apparently quite exceptional in having a search engine, that was for quite some time competitive with Google.
“Aren't you on the pill? You should take the after pill then, just to be safe.” I will not. And I will not get an abortion either. Most of my lovers didn't like condoms but they were genuinely scared when I told them that I hadn't “solved it” for them in advance by taking contraceptive pills and I was not going to “solve it” for them later either – by the after pill or abortion. On the other hand, I made also very clear to them that I wouldn't expect them to play the father if they didn't want to except for some financial support (legally, if necessary). And they got scared. Isn't it a paradox? They don't want to use condoms because it is a bit “less pleasant” and a mere threat of having to support a human being that they would create (which would be the only consequence of their incompetency or lack of knowledge of their own bodies) made them scared.

So here is where I stand: I am not so-called “pro-life”, in the sense of being against choice. It's just that my choice has been already made. I cannot imagine killing something that might become a human being and who for some reason would take shelter in my body. I respect everything that is trying to stay alive (I don't kill insects and there was a time when I was even sad for having to kill harmful bacteria in my body), so how could I kill something that is supposedly safe in my body and might grow to become something like me? Once when I was talking about a potential “baby” inside of me, I was corrected by my male lover that an embryo is not a baby, it's a fetus. Within reason, anyone can believe whatever they wish but the important thing is that it is a belief. It is not a scientific fact,* it's a cultural proclamation that aspires to the creation of ethical rules and eventually laws. I believe that our science can determine when development of various organs start and (to a lesser extent) whether “it” already feels something or not yet. But differentiating between a human and not-quite-yet-human is very arbitrary: is it conception, first hormonal changes in female body, development of specific organs, delivery, giving a name to a new human, a passage ritual of some sort? When they start paying taxes?

I have met women who consider abortions to be murders and yet don't regret having got one in the past. I have met women who are very pro-choice but still regret their decision. I have met women who don't care at all. I have met men who regret their sexual partner having had an abortion and those who regret that their partners didn't get one. And of course men who don't care at all or don't even know that their lovers have gone through abortions. I am fine with almost all the decision a woman can make. I respect and very much approve of a strongly pro-choice legislative but individual final decisions are not made around the question whether “it” is a human being or a fetus. In my case, it would be made around my feeling that urges me to protect life (and as you might know, I don't even like children and for now I am decided not to have any – as long as they don't “happen” because of a selfish asshole). Unfortunately, most women don't have a luxury to decide based on their feelings, they decide according to their over-all situation. However, no man should have a right to tell any woman that the embryo that he created in her body, is not a human being – in order to convince her to kill “it”.

* The ontological status of “scientific facts” is not discussed here. And will probably never be discussed here.

Lives of someone like me and of, you know, “the people” rarely cross and saying that I “know them” is about as arrogant as bragging about (well, “checking”) your privilege that you don't understand “their” problems. Up until recently I had been annoyed by many polyamory discourses because I was thinking that people with existential problems don't really have time for this. But then … no, I realized it's not entirely true. Let me explain.

Many years ago, I worked with with a woman from a very different social class who at that time had two and a half jobs, a son, a husband with depressions, and a lover. This situation was stable at least for a few years over which I was meeting her regularly at work. Back then, I had been already for some time living my soap opera life: dramatically falling in love, not being happy, meeting someone new, dramatic break-up, and everything over again. Years later I discovered the concept of “open relationship” which seemed to have solved my problems: if you are honest, if you talk everything through, you can have it all – a stable relationship and casual sex. The only two things you need is honesty and an informed and enthusiastic consent, right? Right?? No. Let me explain.

People like me have been used to not discriminate on grounds of gender identity, sexual orientation, skin color, physical and mental abilities, and social class. If everyone is like me, it works perfectly: if I meet a person who is like me except for, say, a skin color and/or gender identity, there is no problem. I would never be a person who would discriminate someone just because they're black. But how tolerant are we towards intolerance? How much of a progressive approach is it still reasonable to ask from a person of the working class? I am going to wrap it up, don't worry.

My point is that the concepts of honesty and the “informed and enthusiastic consent” are bourgeois and if there is something I got from Foucault (I know that he is rather overestimated), it's that this idea of constantly throwing up your mental and emotional intestine is nothing “natural” or “moral” per se. In polyamorous communities I have been following on various social networks, there is mostly zero tolerance towards what they call cheating which is (unsurprisingly) the situation of having more than one sexual or romantic partners without them knowing about it (and cheerfully consenting to it). My coworker in my old past was a very brave woman, who was providing for her family, taking care of her son and husband whom she didn't leave despite him being ill and factually disabled. She at the same time found emotional support in another person and not only do I think that it was not “too bad”, but I would even suggest that all considered, the way she was solving her situation was the best possible.

To conclude this, I think that polyamory is “a thing” even for people outside of the “super progressive liberal youngish middle class”. They just might not be exactly following the rules polyamorous communities have formulated for themselves. Was my coworker cheating on her husband? I think it's a wrong question.

I am the lucky one: I have my own apartment. It didn't always use to be like that but I was always dreaming of it. Just to be able to invite anyone to have dinner or to spend the night without having to ask my parents or the owner of the place.

Once an ex-girl of my partner whom I hadn't even known that time yet asked me if she could stay at my place for a night. Of course she could. And my partner was angry. "Doesn't she have anyone else in Prague to stay with?" " ... it didn't cross my mind to ask." And I don't know till now. If anyone needs my help, what is here to ask about?
When my sister sort of ran away from home and asked if she can sleep at my place, I didn't ask why and for how long. Yes. Without the slightest doubt. (Even though I called my mum a day after to ask what really happened and helped them to make up.)
Not long ago a friend of mine told me he might have to interrupt his studies and therefore leave the dorm. "You can always stay at my place." "Really? Thanks."

When I was young I was reading adventurous stories and was dreaming they had been being written about me. I was experiencing Indian, scout, sea, and knightly adventures and was looking for the true friendship sealed by blood. There was the courage in my mind and the strength in my hands and the speed in my feet. I was building shelters, setting up flagpoles, carrying people and wiping off their tears.

"And then the occasion arose when I had to meet the man's eyes. An unfamiliar weight burdened me. The real world challenged my claims. As a woman I encounter difficulties in the development of my bodily schema."

I have always been the second one, the derived female sex, and one of the many spheres of the man's world. "I resolved, since it was impossible for me to get away from an inborn complex, to assert myself as a WOMAN."
I was looking for my feminine energy, tenderness, empathy, kindness. I was touching my body and finally learnt to love it. I was longing to devote myself to its fertility and to enjoy it. But soon I understood my power of fertility to be insufficient and that no-one cared for its remains.

I was looking for women of power in the past but I found out their womanliness has been being rejected. I struggled to put my body to virile performances but they showed me as a monster. I was pushing my mind to the heights but they wouldn't listen to me, they would touch me.
I am cover from head to toe, without make-up, short-haired... I am walking on the streets and there are philosophical books and textbooks of dead languages in my bag. Men are undressing me with their eyes, smacking, whistling, and addressing me. What gives them a right to make a claim to me? Where does the desire to shout at me come from? From my deeply hidden genitals?

"I used to feel in myself a soul as immense as the world, truly a soul as deep as the deepest of rivers. I was a master and I was advised to adpot the humility of the woman."

Yesterday I was sitting at the window until late at night, I was talking about my confinement, and feeling how much he was longing for me. And that had I been a man, he wouldn't have been there with me. I was watching the night traffic and envying the people who knew what they were heading for. And now in the morning I am not being heard, I am calling into the corridor, grey with cold, and you are leaving me behind. As a guarantee of your home and human warmth which is waiting for you till you come again sometime.

(English version here.)

Muži mě svlékají pohledem, mlaskají a hvízdají, oslovují mě.

„Opravdový sadista by nikdy nepřipustil masochistickou oběť (v Justýně jedna z obětí mnichů vysvětluje: „Chtějí prolévat slzy obětí: poslali by pryč jakoukoli dívku, která by sem přišla dobrovolně.“).“
(Deleuze, str. 40–41)

(Deleuze, str. 41)

Dva způsoby vidění světa Deleuze podává prostřednictvím interpretace děl markýze de Sada a Leopolda von Sacher-Masocha. Stále znovu a znovu.

Tolik Deleuze.

Zároveň bych mohla najít mnoho dalších paralel – Lyotardovu „lyrickou exaltaci“ a „živý obraz“, negativní a pozitivní diskriminaci,...

**BDSM = Bondage & Discipline + Domination & Submission + Sadism & Masochism.

Walter J. Ong ve své knize Orality and Literacy: The Technologizing of the Word, vydané roku 1982 (!), pojednává rozdíl mezi orální a literární kulturou.

A toho „boha“ radši nebudu komentovat.
